The ranges, by paint

The number on the tin is the application minimum. It is not the same as the temperature the coat needs while it cures, which is why the checker above asks for two figures.

The overlap in the "ideal" column is the honest answer to the question: 15 to 24 °C (60 to 75 °F), overcast, light breeze, dry night to follow. Everything else is a compromise with a named cost.

Why the overnight low decides the job

Paint does not stop working when you put the brush down.

A latex paint dries in two stages. The water evaporates, which takes an hour or two and is what people mean by "dry". Then the resin particles left behind have to flow together into a continuous film — coalescence — and that takes far longer, typically a full 24 hours, and only happens above the minimum temperature.

If the temperature drops below that minimum while the second stage is still running, the film never forms properly. What you get is a coat that looks fine on the day and fails later: poor adhesion, chalking, a surface that marks under a fingernail, or paint that peels off in sheets the following spring.

This is why a bright 16 °C afternoon in late October is a trap. The daytime reading passes, the job looks good at 5 pm, and the 4 °C night quietly ruins it.

The rule that avoids most of it

Do not start unless the temperature will stay above the paint's minimum for the whole cure window — usually the rest of the day and the following night. In practice that means checking tonight's low before you open the tin, not after.

Surface temperature, not air temperature

Every specification is written against surface temperature. The air figure is a proxy, and in two situations it is a bad one.

In direct sun, a surface runs hotter than the air — a dark wall or a metal door in full sun can be 20 to 30 °F above the air temperature. Paint hitting a hot surface skins over instantly, before it can level out or wet the substrate. You get visible brush marks, lap lines where wet met dry, and poor adhesion despite a perfectly acceptable air reading.

In early spring and late autumn, masonry runs colder than the air. A brick or stone wall has enormous thermal mass and lags days behind the weather. A mild afternoon after a cold week can have 15 °C air against a 7 °C wall, which is below the latex minimum even though the forecast looks fine.

The check takes a moment: put the back of your hand on the surface. If it is noticeably cooler than the air, wait. If it is too hot to leave your hand on, move to the shaded side.

The order to paint a building in

Given all of the above, the shade is what you follow, not the sun:

  1. Start on the west face in the morning, while it is still shaded and has warmed overnight.
  2. Move to the north face through the middle of the day.
  3. Take the east face in the afternoon, once the sun has come off it.
  4. Save the south face for an overcast day, or the last hours of the afternoon.
  5. Stop early enough that the final coat has several hours of daylight and warmth left.

Stopping early is the discipline people skip. A coat applied at 6 pm in October has an hour of useful warmth and then twelve hours of cold, which is the worst possible combination.
