What Apple Weather actually is
Apple does not own weather stations. Neither does anyone else selling you a weather app.
What exists is a global network of public observation infrastructure — surface stations, weather balloons, radar, buoys, aircraft reports and satellites — run mostly by national meteorological agencies. That data feeds numerical weather models, also mostly run by national agencies, and the output is available to anyone.
Apple Weather takes that input and runs its own forecasting on top of it, delivered through the service Apple calls WeatherKit. The 2020 acquisition of Dark Sky brought in a forecasting approach known for short-term precipitation, and it was folded into the service before the Dark Sky app was retired.
So the honest framing of "is it accurate" is: it is one interpretation of shared underlying data, and its quality varies by what you ask and where you stand.
The three questions hiding inside "accurate"
Most disagreements about weather-app accuracy come from mixing these up.
Is the current temperature right? Almost always, within a degree or two. This is the closest thing to a direct measurement in the app — an observation from a nearby station, adjusted for your location. It is the most trustworthy number on the screen.
Is the forecast right? Depends entirely on horizon. Temperature 24 hours out is usually good. Rain in the next hour is genuinely difficult. Anything past about a week is a general expectation rather than a prediction, from any provider.
Is it right here? This is the one people actually mean, and it is not really about accuracy at all. It is about resolution — see hyperlocal weather.
Where it is strong and weak
Accuracy tracks the density of the observation network far more than it tracks the brand on the app.

Why it feels wrong more often than it is
Three effects make an accurate forecast feel unreliable.
Probability read as a promise. A 40% chance of rain means it rained on roughly 40% of comparable days. On the 60% it did not, the forecast was right and felt wrong. Nobody remembers the correct dry days.
Grid cells versus gardens. The model reports for an area, not a point. Rain that fell on the far side of town verified the forecast and disappointed you.
Asymmetric memory. A forecast that misses a barbecue is remembered for a year. A hundred quietly correct days are not remembered at all. This applies to every provider and is the main reason everyone believes their weather app is uniquely bad.
Before deciding an app is inaccurate, check whether the thing it got wrong was a forecast or a location. "It said 18 °C and my patio was 24 °C in the sun" is not an inaccurate forecast — it is a correct shade reading next to a sunny patio.
What no app can do
Worth being plain about, because it is often implied otherwise:
- No iPhone measures outdoor air temperature. There is no outdoor air sensor in the device. Every temperature in every iPhone weather app comes from a weather service. An app claiming to read the air around you is not doing that.
- No app resolves your street. Reporting for your coordinates is not the same as observing at your coordinates, and the difference is largest exactly where terrain and surfaces vary most.
- No provider is best everywhere. Whichever service wins in one city loses in another, which is why "most accurate weather app" is a question without a general answer.
So should you trust it?
For the things a temperature app is for — what the air is doing now, how cold tonight will be, whether to paint or cover the plants — Apple Weather is a reasonable source, and the numbers it gives you are close to observations rather than deep forecasts.
For rain in the next hour in complex terrain, treat any provider's answer as a hint. And for the gap between the reported reading and the one you feel standing outside, the answer is not a better app but an understanding of why your street differs from the forecast.
