What the number actually is
A published first frost date is a statistic, and knowing which statistic changes how you use it.
Take the daily minimum temperature for one location over about 30 years. For each year, note the first date after midsummer when it reached 0 °C (32 °F). You now have 30 dates. The published figure is the point where half of those years had frosted and half had not — the median.
So the date means: there is a 50 percent chance frost has arrived by now. It is a coin flip. It is not the date frost arrives, it is not a guarantee for planning, and it is not the earliest frost on record.
Which is why the experience of gardeners everywhere — "we frosted three weeks early again" — is not bad luck. It is the other half of the distribution.
The spread matters more than the date
Because the number is a median, the useful question is how wide the distribution is around it. For most temperate locations the answer is three to four weeks either side, meaning a genuine range of six to eight weeks.

Good sources publish all three. If you only have the median, assume the 10 percent date is about three weeks earlier and start watching then.
Air frost and ground frost are different events
Standard dates are based on air temperature at the official measuring height — about 1.5 metres, shaded and ventilated — reaching 0 °C.
Ground frost happens sooner and more often. On a clear still night the ground radiates heat to the sky and can end up two or three degrees colder than the air above it. So grass, low foliage and car roofs can be white while the official reading bottomed out at 2 or 3 °C.
For a gardener this is the important distinction, because a tender plant at ground level experiences the ground frost. In practice: treat a forecast low of 3 °C or below as a possible frost on the ground, especially if the night is clear and calm. The mechanism is covered in at what temperature frost forms.
Your garden is not the weather station
Published dates describe a standard site: open ground, away from buildings, at a particular elevation. Your garden almost certainly differs, and often by more than the difference between neighbouring towns.
Earlier frost than the published date:
- A valley bottom, a hollow, or the lowest corner of a sloping garden, where cold air pools.
- Open ground with a clear view of the sky.
- Behind a solid fence across a slope, which dams the cold air draining downhill.
- Any spot noticeably higher than the reporting station.
Later frost than the published date:
- Against a south or west-facing wall, which stores heat and radiates it back overnight.
- Under a tree canopy or a pergola, which blocks radiation to the sky.
- Near a large body of water.
- Inside a town, especially a dense one, thanks to the urban heat island.

Write down the date of your first frost each year, and the forecast low that night. After two or three years you will know both your own date and your own offset from the forecast. That pair of numbers beats any published climatology, because it describes the place you actually garden.
Frost dates and hardiness zones answer different questions
They get conflated constantly, and they are not measuring the same thing.
A frost date is about timing — when the growing season starts and ends. It governs sowing, planting out, harvesting and protecting.
A hardiness zone is about depth of cold — how cold the coldest night of an average winter gets. It governs whether a perennial, shrub or tree survives the winter at all.
A plant can be entirely hardy in your zone and still be killed by an early autumn frost, because in early autumn it is in soft growth with no cold hardening yet. Hardiness is a property of a dormant plant; frost damage in September happens to a plant that has not gone dormant.
Using the date properly
- Find your 10 percent date and start watching forecast lows from then, not from the median.
- Identify your cold spots and treat them as two or three weeks earlier than the rest of the garden.
- Act on the forecast, not the calendar. The date says when to be alert; the overnight low says whether tonight is the night — when to cover your plants covers what to do then.
- Keep your own record. Two seasons of notes is more useful than any published number.
