They handle more than you expect

A chicken wears a down coat it cannot take off. Feathers trap air, the bird fluffs up to increase that trapped layer, and a healthy adult of a hardy breed sits comfortably at temperatures that would send its owner indoors.

Cold-hardy breeds are fine down to about −10 °C (14 °F) without any intervention, and cope well below that given a dry, draught-free coop. Flocks in Canada and the northern United States overwinter routinely at −20 °C and colder.

The instinct to intervene is usually the owner's discomfort rather than the bird's, and acting on it tends to make things worse.

The three things that actually matter

Not temperature. In order of importance:

Dry. Damp air conducts heat away from a bird far faster than dry air, and moisture is what causes frostbite. Chickens themselves are the moisture source — breathing and droppings put a surprising amount of water into a closed coop overnight.

Ventilated. Which follows directly. Moisture has to get out, and that means openings high above the roosts, where air can leave without blowing across the birds. This is the single most common mistake: sealing a coop up tight for winter, which traps the moisture and makes frostbite more likely rather than less.

Draught-free at roost height. Ventilation above, no moving air where the birds sit. Those two are not contradictory, they are the whole design problem.

Silkies deserve a specific mention: their feathers lack the structure that makes a normal feather shed water, so they get wet to the skin and lose insulation entirely. A wet silkie in the cold is in real trouble.

Frostbite, and the roost that prevents it

Combs and wattles are the vulnerable parts — thin tissue, minimal blood flow, maximum exposure. Roosters with large single combs suffer first. Early signs are pale or greyish tips; later, black and dry.

Why heat lamps are the hazard, not the solution

A heat lamp in a wooden coop full of dust and dry bedding is a serious fire risk, and coop fires are not rare. Worse, heated birds never acclimatise, so if the power fails on the coldest night of the year they face it with no adaptation at all. A dry, ventilated coop with good roosts is both safer and more effective.

Water is the real winter job

Chickens can go a while on reduced feed. They cannot go long without water, and in freezing weather water is the thing that needs constant attention.

A heated base or a purpose-made heated drinker solves it where power reaches the coop. Otherwise: change the water two or three times a day, use rubber bowls you can knock ice out of rather than plastic that cracks, keep the drinker out of the wind, and put it where you will see it rather than at the back of the run.

Feed helps in a specific way. Scratch grains or corn in the late afternoon give the birds something to digest overnight, and digestion generates heat at exactly the hours it is needed.
